Time-travel Trail Hikes
Imagine traveling down a sandy trail in the Park before the turn of the century, on your way to stay at Reed’s Hotel. Join us on a hike down Reed’s Road or one of our historic trails, and take a trip down memory lane. We’ll explore and discover the unique history of Island Beach State Park and remember the people who visited and appreciated this Island over 100 years ago! FUN for the whole family. Free. Bring your curiosity and keen senses as we take you through the Dunes, Scrub, Thicket, Maritime Forest, and Salt Marsh habitats on a quest to catch a glimpse of creatures big and small. Fiddler crabs, terrapins, elusive otters, fox, and a variety of birds and insects are just some of the creatures that call this unique barrier beach ecosystem home. FUN for the whole family. Free. Moths and Night Birds
Join Park Natural Educators for an evening hike to explore moths and birds that awaken when the sun goes down. Learn about these extraordinary nocturnal creatures that survive in the dark. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. FUN for the whole family. Free. Pre-registration required 7:00-10:00pm. May 5 (May 5th program canceled due to inclement weather. Discover the Birds of Island Beach – Guided Bird Walks
Birding has become one of America’s most popular outdoor hobbies. Come join us on a hike to find our fine feathered friends and discover why this past-time is so enjoyable! Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret and Double-crested Cormorants are only a handful of species we are likely to see on our hike through the diverse habitats of Island Beach State Park. Sunset and Full Moon Hikes
Join us on a stroll to watch the sunset over Barnegat Bay. Or, be adventurous and join us on a night hike to discover “whoooo” is awake when the sun goes down at Island Beach State Park! Be amazed at the bioluminescent creatures that glow in the dark. Discover amazing and beautiful moths. Use your senses to learn about the extraordinary adaptations that allow nocturnal creatures to survive by moonlight. FUN for the whole family. Fee: $5 per person. Pre-registration required. Sunset hikes 7:00-9:00pm: June 25, July 9, 16, 23, August 6, 13, 20. Full Moon hikes 8:00-10:00: June 3, July 3, August 2, 31.
Surf Fishing Clinic
No fish tales told here! Come learn the techniques for successful surf fishing and try your hand at catching Striped Bass or Fluke. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm, all fishing equipment and bait is supplied. FUN for ages 10 yrs and older, minors must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $10 per person. Pre-registration required. From 8:00am-1:00pm. July 6, 13, 19, 20, 27, August 3, 10, 16, 17, 24, 31. Birding by Kayak
The Sedge Islands: Then, and Now
Did you know Babe Ruth used to duck hunt in the Sedge Islands? Barnegat Bay was once a commercial hub for “market gunners”, baymen, and salt hay farmers. Several historical structures remain in the Sedge Islands today where men would come and make their living. On this peaceful paddle through the bay you’ll learn about the buildings constructed here, the people who lived here long ago, and how they utilized the natural resources of these beautiful islands. Park Naturalists will guide you by kayak to learn how some things have changed and some things remain the same. FUN for ages 14 yrs and older, minors must be accompanied by an adult. A Sunset Paddle
Join Park Naturalists for a peaceful evening kayak paddle and watch the sunset over Barnegat Bay. FUN for all ages 14 years and older, minors must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $25.00 per person.
